3 rules to avoid ugly language

gossiping

One of my favorite columnists Jeffrey Zaslow recently wrote an article titled: “Before You Gossip, Ask Yourself This…” He talks about pop culture encouraging children to diss each other and  the need for guidance to discourage evil language. The article hit home probably because I had just encountered this problem with my youngest daughter.  Granted, I was expecting to deal with catty behavior in middle school…but my daughter is in the second grade.  To make matters worse, she was the instigator!

She was being mean to another girl in her class and the teacher brought it to my attention. My daughter and I sat down “to talk” about her behavior and how she would feel if the situation were reversed.  As our girls grow older, they will probably encounter more instances of verbal bullying than physical bullying.  Today’s culture of reality t.v., anonymous websites and Facebook can desensitized our children to how hurtful cruel words can be.  If that were not enough, there is a permanence today that didn’t exist before.  Once something is out there on the web, it’s hard to get it back.  The article suggests that we ask ourselves 3 questions before we talk about someone:

  • Is it kind?
  • Is it true?
  • Is it necessary?

Definitely something to think about.  Hmmmm.

Happy 2010 From My Classy Girl to Yours

Happy New Year from My Classy Girl

We look forward to bringing you great content in 2010 for your classy girl! Happy New Year!

Happy Holidays is a rather generic greeting

Holiday Sayings

We all know the expression Happy Holidays.  It’s everywhere this time of year.  You’ll hear it from people in stores, at the post office, at work, at school, even at church. In fact, a lengthy discussion recently ensued when a parishioner wished our priest Happy Holidays.  The expression is so generic that as a society, it seems that we no longer celebrate what makes each of us special.  How can we teach our children to be accepting of differences if we can’t even acknowledge our differences?

December is a wonderful month packed with quite a few religious and non religious holidays. I can think of Hanukkah, Muharram, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Winter Solstice, the Moon Festival and New Years.  Rather than wish our friends a generic Happy Holidays shouldn’t we express sentiments that reflect what they celebrate?  In March, I wish my Persian friends a Happy New Year and in October (or late September) I offer the same sentiments to my Jewish friends.  In turn they wish me a Happy New Year in December.

So the next time that someone you know well, wishes you a Happy Holidays perhaps you’ll return the sentiment in a less generic manner.
