Suit Up!

Garnet Hill One piece

It’s bathing suit time!  No, not for us, but for them (Thank goodness!)  I do love it when the bathing suit catalogues start to arrive in my mail box. They help me to see my way through the dark of winter to spring.  I have seen some really adorable patterns for girls.

The Garnet Hill Kids’ Early Spring catalogue is one I recommend you look at and soon.  The patterns range from Lilly Pulitzer look-a-likes to animal prints.  The styles are the classic one pieces, halters, tankinis and bikinis.  My classy girl and I looked through the book, and she found 2 patterns and styles she liked.  Because she swims a lot, she shies away from halters and prefers the comfort of one-pieces and scoop-neck tankinis.  Of course, we will purchase a bikini at some point- from where I don’t yet know, but in the meantime we got a jump on the basics.  While some of the styles can be a bit pricey, the good news is that on some suits, if you purchase 2 of the same style– now before February 16 (or while supplies last), you get almost 30% off.   For whatever the reasons-chlorine, lots of wear, salt water, my classy girl wears through several bathing suits before August.  So now in the dead of winter, it just seems the ideal time to stock up on bathing suits for those long, warm, sunny summer days.  I did say sunny, right?

To Wear or Not to Wear…Holiday Outfits

Look for dresses that work year round

I love the holiday season because it offers the opportunity to get a little more dressed up than we might under everyday circumstances.  Instead of pulling on a pair of jeans, we might wear a skirt.  We want to visually show that we treasure getting together with loved ones.  I like to think that we are taking the time to recognize a special moment which deserves a little extra effort.  Of course we don’t REALLY need to dress up but isn’t it fun and doesn’t it make for a nicer picture?

A female writer recently questioned the value of wearing holiday themed outfits.  She described the reindeer sweaters and green velvet tops that she has accumulated over time.  She challenged buying an outfit that could only be worn for one or two days during the year.  It started me thinking about children’s holiday outfits, since many mothers start planning what their children will wear for the holidays.

In fact, I don’t recommend holiday attire.  Instead, I encourage you to select special occasion outfits for your children that can be worn year-round.  Your daughter should be able to wear her beautiful dress at Thanksgiving, at Chanukah/Christmas/Kwanza, at New Years, at a wedding, for a birthday, for high tea at the St Regis, well you get my point.  Finding a special outfit takes enough effort and children grow so quickly that it’s more practical to select pieces that can be worn on multiple occasions during the year.

Men seem to have holiday dressing down to a science.  They don’t buy entire outfits for one day.  They simply accessorize.  Every year, they pull out a tie with snowmen [or reindeers or pine trees] and voilà, they have a holiday outfit.  Perhaps we can follow the same logic and accessorize our children’s outfits rather than buy entire outfits.  Colorful tights and festive hair accessories add a nice touch and say holiday just as much as an entire outfit.  What do you think?  Add a comment and let us know.
