Celebrate Classy Girl Shoes Like Suri Cruise

I am huge fan of holiday traditions (almost to a Griswold-esque degree), but there is no tradition I love more than the ones we’ve established with our children. Every year my husband picks out a special holiday dress for his girls to wear, and I get to pick out the shoes. Aside from the fantisies I have about what shoes to choose when the girls are teenagers (and can properly appreciate a fabulous pump or slingback), right now this means “party shoes” (a Classy Girl’s best friend).

This year I went for a budget buy (since both girls are in the “seek and destory” phase of life), and chose the Circo Adelaide Glitter Ballet Shoes (in Ivory) and the Pre-Walk Osh Kosh Alfreda Crochet Dress Shoes (in White) from Target. Each pair are so beautifully orante and feminine, that I’ve started calling them the “Midsummer Night’s Dream” shoes (perfect for Classy Girls). If you want to splurge a little more on the perfect party shoes, I also love Sophia Style.com or anything from Zappos.

Classic Dresses, Everyday Style

olive juice

Okay I am one of those Mom’s who bemoans the loss of Best & Co. I liked that style; it was classic children’s clothing.  I am looking around for another go-to fashion catalogue that has everyday, classic dresseswith European flair, but with affordable prices. We’ve outgrown Hanna style, still love mini boden sportswear, but need multi-functional dresses. Maybe because my daughter wears a uniform all week, she is just wild about dresses.  From piano lessons, to play dates; from movies to museums, the dress is her weekend style.  So I am always on the hunt for an everyday, fashionable dress.  No sequins, no cartoon charaters, no lycra!!

I am not complaining about my daughter’s desire for dresses.  In fact, I like it, and that’s why I try to fulfill her wishes.  She has years to wear jeans.  Ironically, my husband often asks her why she doesn’t wear jeans, and she replies she prefers dresses.  He then jokes and says that when she’s older, he’s going to remind her of her love for dresses so he doesn’t have to buy her the $100+ pair of  jeans!

Anyway, I think I found an ideal solution: Olive Juice dresses. They are adorable.  (oops! wrong word for my daughter)  They are quite fashionable.  Olive Juice holiday dresses are in the $40-$70 range, and their non-holiday dresses are on sale and in the $20 -$35 range.  What I like most about the dresses from Olive Juice is they are stylish, not trendy, and the colors are very sophisticated.

Oh, and yes, they do have clothes for boys.

Cozy, Holiday Clothing For Little Classy Girls

My 5 month old is likely one of the messiest babies on earth (and getting worse by the day), and it’s beginning to take it’s tole on her wardrobe. Between the spit-up, the pureed sweet potato or (her favorite accessory) the copious amounts of drool…our clothing options are dwindling by the millisecond.

This is why I have a huge crush on the new Copper Mountain Collection (for ages 0 to 24 months) from Gap Baby. With dark fabrics (like rich plaids and crisp browns), it would be easy to conceal any wayward stains, while still having my baby look adorable in cozy, mountain inspired styles. Now I just wish they made the collection for grown-ups!

To Wear or Not to Wear…Holiday Outfits

Look for dresses that work year round

I love the holiday season because it offers the opportunity to get a little more dressed up than we might under everyday circumstances.  Instead of pulling on a pair of jeans, we might wear a skirt.  We want to visually show that we treasure getting together with loved ones.  I like to think that we are taking the time to recognize a special moment which deserves a little extra effort.  Of course we don’t REALLY need to dress up but isn’t it fun and doesn’t it make for a nicer picture?

A female writer recently questioned the value of wearing holiday themed outfits.  She described the reindeer sweaters and green velvet tops that she has accumulated over time.  She challenged buying an outfit that could only be worn for one or two days during the year.  It started me thinking about children’s holiday outfits, since many mothers start planning what their children will wear for the holidays.

In fact, I don’t recommend holiday attire.  Instead, I encourage you to select special occasion outfits for your children that can be worn year-round.  Your daughter should be able to wear her beautiful dress at Thanksgiving, at Chanukah/Christmas/Kwanza, at New Years, at a wedding, for a birthday, for high tea at the St Regis, well you get my point.  Finding a special outfit takes enough effort and children grow so quickly that it’s more practical to select pieces that can be worn on multiple occasions during the year.

Men seem to have holiday dressing down to a science.  They don’t buy entire outfits for one day.  They simply accessorize.  Every year, they pull out a tie with snowmen [or reindeers or pine trees] and voilà, they have a holiday outfit.  Perhaps we can follow the same logic and accessorize our children’s outfits rather than buy entire outfits.  Colorful tights and festive hair accessories add a nice touch and say holiday just as much as an entire outfit.  What do you think?  Add a comment and let us know.
